I’m pretty sure I was born with a paintbrush in my hand. As a child, my parents gave me an oil painting set, fit for professional artists. I made good use of this gift, creating several murals hidden behind curtains all over the house, pleading the Fifth every time these were discovered. For various reasons I never received a formal art education; all I’ve learned has been self-taught, through trial and error. I live to create and I’m happiest when painting or carving. If it were at all possible I would work on my art projects 24/7.
My go-to medium is oil paint. That’s not to say I won’t work with acrylics, water colors, or pastels, but in my humble opinion, oils are so much easier to use and the vibrancy of the colors once the projects are completed can’t be beat.
For murals, I’ve always used semi-gloss indoor house paint. All the murals I created were for children’s rooms or babies’ nurseries and using indoor house paint ensures that any stains, scuff marks, or tiny fingerprints can be cleaned off the walls without damaging the work.
All artwork on denim jackets is done using non-toxic fabric paint. Once the paint dries, it is ironed to heat-set the design and the garment can be machine-washed in cold water, using regular laundry detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Interestingly, after drying and heat-setting, the fabric paint takes on a leather-like feel.
Several years ago, I discovered, quite by accident, my absolute total passion: wood carving. I’ve only used pine wood in my work, so I have no other type of wood to compare it to, but pine works for me.
Lately, I’ve been doing paintings on natural ocean and river rocks. They’re a fun medium to work with and the pieces are relatively fast to complete.
I love animals and enjoy studying and observing nature in my spare time. Many of my pieces are directly influenced by my interest in nature. I love recreating plants and wildlife in my work.
